THE SKELLEMONT THEATRE / TONIGHT
An actress. An abandoned theatre. A reckoning with every role she has been permitted to play.
Written by Manuel SimonsAt sixty-one, Marian Vale has spent four decades turning comic and character roles into a formidable career. When a mysterious invitation brings her to the long-abandoned Skellemont Theatre, she expects employment—or at least the professional courtesy of an audition.
Instead, a precise and faintly sinister Attendant introduces her to two figures preserved like exhibits: The Ingenue and The Broad, embodiments of the younger selves and theatrical types through which Marian has been seen. What begins as a sardonic encounter becomes a contest over who owns an actress’s identity, artistry, intelligence, and future.
“I entered a building.
I have not agreed
to symbolism.”
A sophisticated, sardonic actress whose survival has required glamour, timing, and a refusal to disappear politely.
A meticulous guide whose stage-management precision cannot entirely conceal a more supernatural authority.
The beautiful young actress Marian once was—and the intelligence the industry preferred not to recognize.
The dazzling comic persona who gave Marian her sharpest weapons, and now intends to reclaim them.
The play uses comedy, theatrical archetype, and a supernatural audition to examine ageism, gender, market value, and the roles women are taught to inhabit. Marian’s confrontation is not simply with an industry that has categorized her; it is with the fragments of herself she accepted, suppressed, sharpened, and sold in order to work.
Designed for flexible staging, the Skellemont can emerge from little more than darkness, a ghost light, and the audience’s imagination. The abandoned theatre becomes courtroom, museum, memory chamber, and—perhaps—an arena in which a woman can claim authorship over the part that comes next.
The Role She Was Born to Play was honored in the 2026 Alabama Writers Cooperative Playwriting Competition and selected for publication in the forthcoming Awarded Writers’ Collection.

She has played every role
they gave her.
Now she writes the next one.
